Swimming is the perfect way to cool off and it’s no secret that it has many benefits – from reducing stress, increasing energy levels and boosting immunity. It’s also a great form of exercise and one that almost anyone can do. Fortunately, Hong Kong is a very swim-friendly city with plenty of public pools, as well as hotels with their own stunning outdoor swimming pool views to help you enjoy your workout in style.
The majority of Hong Kong’s public pools are run by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and can be found throughout the city – in all districts and in both the islands and Kowloon. Typically, they have a main 50-metre pool, plus one for teaching and leisure swimmers. There may also be a kids’ pool and water slides. Entrance is $19 per session and lockers are provided for a refundable deposit of $5, or you can bring your own padlock to secure your belongings. Sessions run from 6:30am-12:00, 1:00-6:00 and 7:00-10:00pm.
Several public swimming pools have recently closed in response to the outbreak of coronavirus, but they will reopen once the health risks have passed. The LCSD has advised swimmers to use protective swimwear and wash their hands thoroughly after entering the pool area. Some private pools have also voluntarily closed during the pandemic, although many are open and accepting visitors – but be sure to check with each venue before visiting.
In the meantime, many residents are making good use of their hotel pools. The Four Seasons Hong Kong, for example, is known for its stunning ocean-edge pool where you can get in a morning swim or even relax at the hot and cold whirlpools. Another great option is the Asaya Pool at Rosewood, a gorgeous infinity pool that offers panoramic views of Victoria Harbour and is dotted with lounge chairs for guests to soak up the scenery while sipping a cocktail.
Those looking to escape the blazing sun and insufferable humidity should head for the cooled waters of the public pools in Tsing Yi. This beautiful complex has a large outdoor pool with a teaching and leisure pool, and a small pool for toddlers – perfect for families or individuals who want to cool off while surrounded by breathtaking scenes. In addition, it has a gym, a sauna and a steam room for those who want to take a more active approach to their relaxation. The pools are open from 7:00am-10:00pm.
