When you think of Hong Kong, shopping and dim sum are probably the first things that come to mind. But the city also happens to be home to some of the world’s most spectacular swimming pools – from a natural infinity pool overlooking the sea to the highest indoor infinity pool at the Ritz-Carlton.
The Kowloon Park Swimming Complex is a massive swimming pool complex built as part of a greater redevelopment of Kowloon Park. The project was sponsored, in part or entirely, by the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club (RHKJC). Originally, the pool was managed by the Urban Council, but after that body was disbanded at the end of the millennium, management was shifted to the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
With a design by a joint venture of United Kingdom-based Derek Walker Associates and Hong Kong firm Simon Kwan and Associates, the pool complex features both an indoor and outdoor section. There are a total of five swimming pools, including a 50-metre main pool and training pool as well as diving platforms of various heights. For those who prefer to soak up the sun, there is also a large outdoor pool.
Myrtha pools were used to build the indoor and outdoor sections of this prestigious new structure, which was built to replace the old city aquatics center that was constructed in 1957 and closed in September 2013. The RHKJC selected Myrtha Pools for the construction because of the company’s ability to create high-quality swimming pools with a low energy cost.
Located in the heart of downtown Hong Kong, this rooftop pool at Hotel ICON has a beautiful view over the harbor and skyline of the city. It is open from 06:00 – 22:00 and it offers both sunny and shaded areas for you to relax in the water. If you don’t feel like swimming, the rooftop also has a 24/7 gym.
Although this pool does not have the expansive ocean vistas that some of the others do, it makes up for it with its quirky pink and seafoam green color scheme and flamingo decor. And because Hong Kong doesn’t allow more than 30% capacity in pool areas anyway, you can pretty much have this one all to yourself.
It’s only open to members and hotel guests, but you can book a staycation package with Klook and enjoy access to the pool as well as the rest of the health club facilities at the hotel. Plus, you can sleep in a room with views of the peak! And if that’s not enough to convince you, consider this: the pool is located in the middle of the city, right next to the iconic Bank of China building. Talk about a zen spot.
