In order to qualify for the competition, participants must submit a short description of their innovation and a list of their achievements. In addition, they must have a strong background in science and technology, and their ideas must be innovative and practical. The prize was established in February 2013 by the generosity of Professor Wang Gungwu, who wished to contribute to the advancement of Hong Kong Studies and his alma mater. The fund was matched by the Hong Kong government through the sixth round of the Government Matching Scheme for Higher Education. In addition to the HK$100,000 prize money, the winners will also be given the opportunity to attend the International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS).
