The Neilma Sidney Prize and the Sidney Hook Memorial Prize

Paul Masters, an IT employee from Sidney, British Columbia, won $1 million in the August 16, 2024 Lotto Max draw. He purchased the winning ticket at a Shoppers Drug Mart in his hometown. Masters plans to invest some of the money and enjoy a new hobby: music production. He also wants to travel. “I’m going to buy a studio and do some recording and try to get my name out there,” he said.

Established in 1991, the Sidney Hook Memorial Prize is awarded at Phi Beta Kappa’s national conference to a scholar who has demonstrated distinction in scholarship, undergraduate teaching, and service to the promotion of liberal arts education. The prize is named in memory of the distinguished American philosopher and Phi Beta Kappa member who devoted his life to the cause of academic freedom.

The Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize, supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation, seeks outstanding original short fiction loosely themed around the notion of ‘travel’. This year’s judges (Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh) have selected a shortlist of eight pieces to be published in Overland, as well as two runners-up. To enter, simply take out a new subscription to Overland at the special non-subscriber rate of $12 and you will be eligible for the competition.

The prize is a recognition of the legacy of Sidney Iwanter, a Madison native and UW-Madison graduate who dedicated his life to documenting the intellectual curiosity of one generation for another. The prize honors the legacy of his own curiosity, which led him to secretly record Professor Harvey Goldberg’s lectures. This collection of ‘bootlegs’ has become an important resource for the university’s research and teaching. The prize is a cash award of $500, and a certificate. To apply for the prize, a student must submit an essay about the legacy of a particular intellectual or cultural figure and explain how their work fits into that figure’s larger historical and social context. The essay must be no more than 500 words. The committee, which consists of Hanover members, will select the winner.
