The Best Hong Kong Pools to Cool Off This Summer

Hong Kong summer can be brutal. The sweltering heat and humidity can make anyone want to stay indoors or take a dip in ice-cold water. Luckily, there are plenty of swimming pools in the city to cool off and relax. Some even offer breathtaking views of Hong Kong, making them a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city life.

The Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department has confirmed that it will be impossible to fully reopen public beaches and pools this summer due to the ongoing shortage of lifeguards. Only 40 per cent of the 600 seasonal pool lifeguards have reported for duty so far, which is half of the target number needed.

Swimming is one of the most popular sports in Hong Kong, with millions of people participating in the sport, from competitive swimmers to those who enjoy it for leisure. The closure of pools is particularly disappointing to local recreational and amateur athletes, as it will have a significant impact on the country’s swimming training system, which produces elite swimmers for both Olympic and non-Olympic competitions.

The HKRSPGU also warned that more than 20 public swimming pools may only partially open this month, while around 500 licensed private pools will not open as scheduled, due to the ongoing shortage of lifeguards. Union secretary and full-time swimming instructor Eddy Lau Tak-hung said that beginners who had been learning to swim since the beginning of this pandemic would have missed three years worth of lessons if facilities were closed. He called on the government to allow schools and swimming training institutions to use public pools with no lifeguards, provided that they can guarantee a qualified person will be present at all times.
